Texas governor wants to annex part of Mexico

I can't make this stuff up. Governor Rick Perry just said that Juarez is "...the most dangerous city in America." Of course, the problem is that Juarez is not in America—it's in Mexico. I can understand how someone like Peggy West might not know what country Juarez is in... but Rick Perry is the governor of Texas! And this isn't the first time he has made this mistake. So I figured we'd make a map of the addition to Texas that Governor Rick Perry seems to want. More on the gaffe here.

  1. Juarez -is- in America. It might not be in -the United States- but it is in America.

  2. Of course, it's also worth noting that El Paso is the second safest city in the US. Only Honolulu has a lower violent crime rate.

  3. Concur with Bernard. Everyone from North America and South America is "American". We just haven't come up with a short-hand way to describe people from the US in English. (Though Spanish has the term 'estadounidense'.)

I do think Perry should be more specific by saying something along the lines of "most dangerous city in North America" (assuming that his fact-checking is correct).

On a side note, this blog is awesome.

  4. From a non-American point of view, Bernard is right...but clearly Perry was referring to the USA as America as is American habit. To argue this would be to argue with the statement "The Packers are the best Football team this year." by saying "The Packers don't even play football...they play American Football." From the *context* of both of these statements you can tell which body of land or sport to which the speaker is referring.
